Root canal treatment

Tooth pain, sensitivity to hot or cold, or pain when biting may be signs that a tooth needs root canal treatment. Our dental team provides modern root canal treatment to remove infection, relieve pain and help preserve your natural tooth.

When is a root canal needed?

A root canal is needed when inflammation or damage reaches the pulp, the inner part of the tooth that holds the nerve and blood vessels. This is most often caused by deep decay, a cracked or broken tooth, repeated treatment on the same tooth, or an injury.

  • Severe or persistent tooth pain
  • Strong sensitivity to heat or cold
  • Pain when biting or chewing
  • Swelling around the tooth
  • Pain or tenderness in the gum around the tooth
  • A tooth that changes colour or darkens

Not every toothache needs a root canal

Pain can also come from limited decay, gum inflammation, worn teeth or grinding. If the nerve is still healthy, removing the decay and placing a filling may be enough. That is why we start with an accurate diagnosis: your symptoms, an examination and X-rays.

What happens during treatment

The dentist removes the infected or damaged tissue from inside the tooth, cleans and disinfects the root canals, then seals them. In many cases this saves the natural tooth and avoids an extraction. Teeth weakened by large decay or a fracture often need a crown afterwards to protect them.

Is it painful?

Modern techniques and local anaesthesia keep you comfortable during treatment. Mild to moderate sensitivity, especially when chewing, is normal for a few days afterwards and gradually improves.

After your treatment

  • Take any prescribed medication exactly as directed.
  • Don’t eat or drink for 30 minutes after the procedure.
  • Avoid chewing hard or sticky food on the treated side while the temporary filling is in place.
  • Return for your permanent crown if your dentist recommends one.
  • Contact the clinic if the pain is severe or getting worse, or if significant swelling develops.
